Just like a game of Holdem, pot limit holdem is dealt one card at a time beginning with the player to the left of the dealer. That player pays the small blind, and gets the first card the next player is the big blind and gets the next card. The deal continues around the table until the dealer (if playing) deals himself a 4th card. Each player in an Omaha game begins with 4 cards.

After the hand, the deal moves one place to the left of the dealer, so the big blind becomes the small blind. From here on the game is dealt exactly like Texas Holdem.

Preflop betting ensues

Now just like you’d deal a hand of Texas Holdem, you burn a card, by throwing the first card in the muck , three cards face up on the table are the shared community cards

Betting.

Now we burn again. and we flip one card over, the turn card.

Betting

Now the burn a card, and turn over the river card.

Betting happens, dealers done.

Rules of
Pot Limit Omaha is quickly gaining popularity in both online poker rooms and land-based casinos. The premise of the game is akin with that of Texas Hold’em, with a few key differences.

The object of the game is to develop the best 5-card poker hand from the 9 cards available (4 Hole Cards and 5 Community Cards). The highest ranking poker hand wins the pot.

What separates Omaha from Texas Hold’em however is not just the amount of Hole Cards dealt, but the way they must be used. A player MUST combine any of his 2 Hole Cards with any 3 Community Cards when developing a hand.

Small Blinds and Big Blinds are used to sweeten the pot. The Small Blind is equal to the low-end stakes, while the Big Blind is equal to the high-end stakes. So, if the stakes are $2/$4, the Small Blind is $2, and the Big Blind $4. We’ll continue using $2/$4 stakes throughout this tutorial.

Blinds are placed before any cards are dealt. The player left of the dealer button places the Small Blind, while the player left of him places the Big Blind.

The Pot Limit betting structure defines the minimum and maximum bets and raises throughout the hand. The minimum wager is based on the stakes, equal to the high-end of $4. The maximum wager is always equal to the size of the pot.

The game begins after Blinds have been placed as each player is dealt 4 Hole Cards. The first round of betting starts with the player left of the Big Blind, who may Call the Big Blind ($4), Raise (max $16) [$4 pot + $4 bet = $8, Pot Limit Raise of $8 = $16], or Fold. Betting continues around the table in this fashion until the Small Blind bettor, who may call or raise the current bet by adding enough chips to the Small Blind to do so (or Fold). The Big Blind may Check (if no one has Raised), Call, Raise or Fold. Once all bets are called, the hand continues.

The Flop: Three community cards are dealt face-up to the center of the table. Another round of betting begins, same as the last, but starting with the Small Blind bettor this time. He may Check or Bet.

The Turn: A 4th community card is dealt, followed by another round of betting.

The River: A 5th and final community card is dealt. That last round of betting ensues.

The Showdown: A showdown is only necessary if two or more players remain active in the hand (e.g. everyone hasn’t Folded). Each active player will combine exactly 3 Hole Cards and 3 Community Cards to develop the strongest hand possible, then reveal the cards. The highest hand wins the pot.

Since the mid to late 1990’s, Poker fans have been able to play Omaha Poker online, but in the last year or so, the popularity of playing Omaha Poker online has increased so incredibly that the game can be found at any hour of the day, in all formats.

Omaha Poker is offered in cash games with stakes ranging from micro limits to ultra-high stakes action. The most prolific professional poker players of our time are spending a great deal of time at online poker rooms, mostly playing $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha Poker and higher.

How to Play Omaha Poker

The big difference between Omaha poker and Holdem Poker is that when you play Omaha poker, you MUST use 2 cards from your own hand (you’re dealt 4 as opposed to the 2 you get in holdem) and three from the table. No matter what the hell you hold in your hand, you use two of those cards. So if you have 4 aces in your hand, you have a pair of aces, and you’re not getting trips.

Imagine how this changes things though… Trips isn’t even a strong showdown finisher in a game of Omaha poker. Heck, who has the bigger boat is the question you probably should be asking.

As history has shown us, when a favored professional sports star becomes involved in something, his or her fans will likely follow suit. That certainly seems to be the case as recreational players are swarming to play Omaha Poker online, especially in its Pot Limit betting structure.

Since the World Series of Poker began adding more and more Omaha Poker events, either as straight Omaha Poker or mixed games that involve Omaha Poker, like H.O.R.S.E., playing Omaha Poker online tournaments has also seen a boost in popularity. As such, online poker rooms are adding a significantly higher number of Omaha Poker tournaments to the schedule.

To play Omaha Poker online requires only one thing – an Internet connection. Most online poker rooms allow poker players to join in the action for free, without ever making a deposit. This includes participating in free, play-money tables, but also the ability to play in real-money Freeroll tournaments. This means you can play Omaha Poker online, make real money, and never spend your own money in the process.

The common reaction to this is, “That sounds too good to be true, so it probably is – I’ll pass.”

Case in point: Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad, first player ever to be crowned victor of the World Series of Poker Europe in its 2007 inaugural season. Obrestad started out playing poker online, and affirms that she never once deposited money. She started out by playing Freeroll tournaments and worked her way to Pro status in only a few years, eventually winning the WSOPE Bracelet.

So, with your apprehension behind you and the desire to play Omaha Poker online brightening the path ahead, it’s time to take that step forward. If you are not well practiced in Omaha Poker, spend some time at the free tables, learning how the game is played and developing an appropriate strategy.

Please be aware that if you play free Omaha Poker online and bust out the opposition on a regular basis, this does not mean you’re ready for the high stakes tables. Playing Omaha Poker online for free means you are up against very loose competition that doesn’t care if they win or lose. You must move up slowly through the stakes to ensure your Omaha Poker strategy is still effective.

If you possess any interest in the game of poker, professionally, casually or otherwise, if probably caught wind of the latest poker variant that is catching the attention of Texas Hold’em aficionados around the world – Omaha Poker.

Yes, Omaha Poker has been around for years now, but never has its popularity soared to such heights, and so quickly at that. Just about everyone who plays poker seems to have a desire to play Omaha Poker, whether at a live casino or at their favorite online poker room.

It’s not exactly clear what caused the sudden outbreak of fans wanting to play Omaha Poker – perhaps it’s the amplified viewership of the World Series of Poker, where Omaha Poker events have steadily risen over the years – but we do know that the Pot Limit betting structure has attracted the most attention. Pot Limit Omaha has its exceptional benefits, because a player can choose to get out early and lose only a little, or stay in the pot go for a huge stack.

Pot Limit is like a combination of Fixed Limit and No Limit poker. The downside of Fixed Limit is that the pot size is incredibly restrictive. An All-In bet is rare, simply because you’re not allow dot bet that high unless you are on tilt already. In the same token, No Limit is dangerous because the entire table could go all-in pre-flop.

To play Omaha Poker in its Pot Limit format, players can bet low to see the flop, then bow out without losing too much if they don’t like the results. Should they stay in, the pot has the potential to increase monumentally before the showdown.

It could be that Texas Hold’em is becoming too stale for many poker fans. Don’t misunderstand; Texas Hold’em remains the reigning champion of favoritism. Omaha Poker is nowhere near taking the top position. But when you play Omaha Poker, the need for disciplined poker strategy is much more prominent.

Texas Hold’em is generally won by the player with the best starting hand. Therefore, if you have it, go for it. Omaha Poker, on the other hand, is often won by a significantly high ranking poker hand. Pocket Aces may be the best starting hand in Texas Hold’em, but a set of Aces will lose most PL Omaha hands.

In short, poker players are looking for added excitement in the way of heightened skills, quick wits and thriving intuition. To play Omaha Poker accomplishes this goal.

Casinos around the world, including the entire west coast of the United States, have responded to the immense desire of their customers to play Omaha Poker by installing new tables strictly providing Omaha Poker games. Other tables have been designated for mixed games, like H.O.R.S.E. and H.O., which include Pot Limit Omaha Poker.

Many online poker rooms have added to their list of tables to play Omaha Poker as the traffic numbers have increased ten-fold over the past few months. More Omaha Poker tournaments are also being added, a move greatly appreciated by those who love to play Omaha Poker.

In the past, Texas Hold’em was considered the number one poker variant n the world. While this fact remains true, Pot Limit Omaha is rapidly gaining in popularity; not just in online poker rooms but in live casinos as well.

It’s not exactly clear what brought about the sudden “Pot Limit Omaha fad” – maybe just a desirable change of pace – but the most affected group of poker enthusiasts seems to be college students.

North America Embraces Pot Limit Omaha

All across North America, land-based casino poker rooms are integrating Pot Limit Omaha into their table games. Chinook Winds Casino in Oregon, for example, has introduced mixed games as a way to incorporate Pot Limit Omaha into the usual line-up. The casino also created cash table that play one Texas Hold’em hand, followed by one hand of Pot Limit Omaha, continuing back and forth in this manner.

Pot Limit Omaha Gains Popularity Online

In the online poker world, Pot Limit Omaha tables have become extremely popular among high stakes players. I visited Full Tilt Poker earlier this morning to investigate the situation and found the esteemed Tom “durrr” Dwan seated at several high stakes PL Omaha tables, ranging from $200/$400 to $500/$1,000, awaiting the peak hour competition. Within a few minutes, a 6-seater table at which Dwan was waiting was already filled to 5 players.

If you’re an avid Texas Hold’em poker player, it may be time to dabble in a new variant if you want to keep up with the Jones’. Pot Limit Omaha is not a difficult game to learn, especially for Texas Hold’em players.

The two games are played in the exact same manner, using Small and Big Blinds, Community Cards and 2-10 players per table. The only real difference is that Omaha is played with 4 Hole Cards, with which “exactly” 2 must be combined with 3 Community Cards to develop the strongest 5-card poker hand.

Then, of course, there’s the ‘Pot Limit’ betting structure, which most players are already familiar with. Basically, the size of the pot determines the maximum bet or raise amount. A pot with $10 in it caps the bet/raise amount at $10. Bet $10 and the pot jumps to $20, as does the max bet/raise.
