Pot Limit Omaha Gaining in Popularity Among College Students.. and therefore, Everyone Else
In the past, Texas Hold’em was considered the number one poker variant n the world. While this fact remains true, Pot Limit Omaha is rapidly gaining in popularity; not just in online poker rooms but in live casinos as well.
It’s not exactly clear what brought about the sudden “Pot Limit Omaha fad” – maybe just a desirable change of pace – but the most affected group of poker enthusiasts seems to be college students.
North America Embraces Pot Limit Omaha
All across North America, land-based casino poker rooms are integrating Pot Limit Omaha into their table games. Chinook Winds Casino in Oregon, for example, has introduced mixed games as a way to incorporate Pot Limit Omaha into the usual line-up. The casino also created cash table that play one Texas Hold’em hand, followed by one hand of Pot Limit Omaha, continuing back and forth in this manner.
Pot Limit Omaha Gains Popularity Online
In the online poker world, Pot Limit Omaha tables have become extremely popular among high stakes players. I visited Full Tilt Poker earlier this morning to investigate the situation and found the esteemed Tom “durrr” Dwan seated at several high stakes PL Omaha tables, ranging from $200/$400 to $500/$1,000, awaiting the peak hour competition. Within a few minutes, a 6-seater table at which Dwan was waiting was already filled to 5 players.
If you’re an avid Texas Hold’em poker player, it may be time to dabble in a new variant if you want to keep up with the Jones’. Pot Limit Omaha is not a difficult game to learn, especially for Texas Hold’em players.
The two games are played in the exact same manner, using Small and Big Blinds, Community Cards and 2-10 players per table. The only real difference is that Omaha is played with 4 Hole Cards, with which “exactly” 2 must be combined with 3 Community Cards to develop the strongest 5-card poker hand.
Then, of course, there’s the ‘Pot Limit’ betting structure, which most players are already familiar with. Basically, the size of the pot determines the maximum bet or raise amount. A pot with $10 in it caps the bet/raise amount at $10. Bet $10 and the pot jumps to $20, as does the max bet/raise.
